PONTIFICAL CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF MINAS GERAIS – PUC Minas

The Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais – PUC Minas, founded in 1958, is one of the five largest universities in Brazil. Its activities concentrate mostly in the Belo Horizonte Campus, divided into four units – Coração Eucarístico, Barreiro, São Gabriel and Praça da Liberdade – and two university centres – Betim and Contagem. PUC Minas also comprises campi in four regions of the State of Minas Gerais: Arcos, Poços de Caldas, Serro and Guanhães. Altogether, PUC Minas has about 60,000 students, 2,000 faculty members and 1,800 staff members.

GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

The aim of the Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering of the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais is to promote formation of qualified human resources for the academic activities, such as research and technological development in mechanical sciences, with areas of concentration in Design and Manufacturing and in Thermal and Fluid Systems. The Program aims at high-level scientific production and the promotion of human resources for the academic and productive sectors. R&D activities are developed in Automotive Engineering, Energy, Manufacturing, Automation and Robotics, Structural Analysis and Computational Mechanics. The Master's Degree and the Doctorate Program of the Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering from PUC Minas are recognized by CAPES, the former started in 1998 and the latter in 2006. The Program has grade 4 from CAPES.

COURSES AND OBJECTIVES

MASTER OF SCIENCE AND DOCTOR OF SCIENCE IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

GENERAL OBJECTIVES: The aim of the Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering of the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais is to promote formation of qualified human resources for the academic activities, such as research and technological development in mechanical sciences, with areas of concentration in Design and Manufacturing and in Thermal and Fluid Systems.

 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

          I -          To develop research projects related to the areas of concentration and lines of research provided in article 3 of these Regulations, for master and doctor degrees, that contribute to the development of the objects and themes found in it.

          II -         To contribute, effectively, in the formation  of qualified human resources for the academic activities, such as research, extension and higher education, as well as to work in the public and private sectors, in the areas of concentration and lines of research offered;

          III -       To develop projects that contribute to the formation of professionals of other areas of knowledge that have interfaces with the area of Mechanical Engineering.

AREAS OF CONCENTRATION

Area(s) of concentration and line(s) of research

Masters

Mechanical Engineering

The Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering of the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais presents, since 2005, two areas of concentration:

  • Thermal and Fluid Systems
  • Design and Manufacturing

LINES OF RESEARCH

The Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering is offered at master’s and PhD levels, with areas of concentratuonin Design and Manufacturing and in Thermal and Fluid Suystems, comprising four lines of research:

  1. Structural analysis and dynamics;
  2. Materials and manufacturing processes;
  • Automotive systems;
  1. Energy systems

LINES OF RESEARCH – MASTER OF SCIENCE AND DOCTOR OF SCIENCE IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

  • Structural analysis and dynamics;
  • Materials and manufacturing processes;
  • Automotive systems;
  • Energy systems

SPECIFICATION OF THE LINES OF RESEARCH:

Thermal and Fluid Systems

The area of concentration Thermal and Fluid Systems presents two lines of research:

  • Automotive Systems

       The line of research Automotive Systems aims to develop research on internal combustion engines, fuels, emissions, intake systems, exhaustion, lubrication, cooling and air conditioning.

  • Energy Systems

        The line of research Energy Systems researches the increasing of th energy efficiency of equipment and processes of solar energy systems for heating or photovoltaic generation, thermal and hydraulic energy generation systems.

Design and Manufacturing

The area of concentration Design and Manufacturing presents two lines of research:

  • Structural Analysis and Dynamics

               The line of research Structural Analysis and Dynamics concentrates on the evaluation of the integrity and dynamic behavior of structures and mechanical components, including stress analysis, fatigue, stability, acoustics and vibrations.

  • Materials and manufacturing processes

        The line of research Materials and Processes of Manufacturing concentrates on the study of the properties of the materials and the processes of manufacturing involving machining and conformation. The research line includes studies on automation of industrial processes, including the development of electromechanical platforms for data acquisition, drive and control of machines.
